Highlights of A Semana printed edition no. 1060 31 August 2012
Judiciary Police on the Island of São Vicente seized three high-cylinder motorcycles believed to have been illegally imported into Cape Verde, according to the main headline on the front page of this week’s printed edition of A Semana. According to Judiciary Police sources, the motorcycles came from the United States unassembled, and were later reconstituted in a warehouse in the Mindelo neighborhood of Monte Sossego.
In political news, A Semana reports that Fernando Moeda, who lost the recente Praia mayoral elections to incumbent Ulisses Correia e Silva, plans to run for the chairmanship of the PAICV’s South Santiago Political Commission. Moeda is expected to announce his decision next week.
Also in the wake of the recent municipal elections, this Friday’s A Semana reports that Santa Catarina mayor Francisco Tavares has demanded that Cape Verdean National Radio and Television RTC leave the building in which its Assomada delegation is housed.
“German journalist arrested for pedophilia in Praia” is another of this Friday’s headlines, revealing suspicions that the accused, who has been ordered held pending trial, has been exploiting minors in his Palmarejo apartment for over a year.
In other headlines, “Florêncio Varela to head University Education Institute,” “Orlando Balla to reduce number of workers at Brava municipal chamber” and “Danielson Veiga hopes to be the next president of the Order of Physicians of Cape Verde.”
Cultural supplement Kriolidadi reports that singer Ary Morais will perform this Friday in Oslo, Norway, in the 7th edition of the Sensommer International Music Festival, before heading to Accra, Ghana, in the month of October. Also in music news, Fogo-born composer and singer Michel Montrond will release his debut album Kamin di Bedju this Friday in the city of São Filipe. “Stand-up comedy seeks a place in the sun” is another of the articles in this week’s cultural supplement, which talks with three young people attempting to conquer Cape Verdean audiences through humor.
With one year to go before elections in the Cape Verdean Soccer Federation, Gerson Melo, the delegate of the Directorate General of Sports on the Island of São Vicente, is being pulled into the running, according to sports supplement Lance.
