Sal court hands down harshest possible sentence to cook who killed Chinese couple 24 July 2012
Sal district court sentenced cook Uzang, who, in December of last year, stabbed a Chinese couple to death in the África 70 district of Espargos, to 25 years in prison – the maximum sentence allowed by Cape Verdean law.
The sentence was read on Friday. In addition to the prison sentence, Uzang was ordered to pay two million escudos in damages.
The crime in question took place on December 11, 2011, in the África 70 district of Espargos, on the island of Sal. Following a fire in their apartment, a Chinese couple was found with various puncture wounds scattered over their bodies. The two were taken to Sal Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries minutes later.
Uzang, also a Chinese national, who worked as a cook in the victims’ home, was later also admitted to the hospital with scrapes and bruises on his body. The 60-year-old man stabbed the couple during an argument, after which he set fire to their apartment in an attempt to hide the evidence of his crime.
