Uziel Sança arrested on Boa Vista 23 July 2012
Sal-based singer Uziel Sança was arrested on the island of Boa Vista in the early morning hours Sunday while performing at a summer kick-off festival on Praia de Diante beach. The musician apparently reacted to orders from the local prosecutor to shut down the concert, which was allegedly “illegal.”
Although the event had been authorized by the local Maritime Delegation and by the Boa Vista municipal chamber, the Boa Vista district attorney ordered the concert stopped, alleging that the municipal chamber did not have the autonomy to authorize this type of event. The singer, who was on the stage performing, was demonstrated his displeasure with the announcement.
“I told Sança that we had to stop the show on order from the local district attorney. He reacted saying that the atmosphere was pleasant and that everything would continue to remain peaceful and orderly. He expressed these opinions with respect and without any sort of offensive statements, but the prosecutor believed that he was denigrating her image and ordered him arrested. There was no reason for him to be detained,” says the event’s promoter, Dadinho Pinto.
The singer remains in custody at the local National Police squadron in Sal Rei and is expected to be taken before a Boa Vista district court judge later today for arraignment.
