Pais e Fidjus de Montrond to perform as Maison des Cultures du Monde in Paris 16 May 2012
Four musicians from Chã das Caldeiras, who make up the traditional musical ensemble Pais e Fidjus de Montrond, have been invited by the French Ministry of Culture to perform next month at the Maison des Cultures du Monde as a part of the Festival de l’Imaginaire.
The invitation was formulated in coordination with Cape Verde’s Ministry of Culture. Violin player João Montrond, guitarist Domingos “Ramiro” Montrond, percussionist Juvenal Gomes de Pina and cavaquinho player Zandro Montrond are the four musicians from the village in the huge crater topping the island of Fogo who will perform at the event.
The participation of this Fogo-based group in the event came following a trip by specialists from the French Ministry of Culture to various different islands in Cape Verde, where they made contact with several traditional musical groups. On Fogo, in addition to the musicians from Chã das Caldeiras, a group of drummers and singers led by Valdomiro was also contacted.
Pais e Fidjus de Montrond essentially plays traditional music, such as coladeira and morna, with a special emphasis on the traditional genres of the island of Fogo, such as talaia baxo and mazurka.
