“There is corruption in the Santa Catarina de Santiago municipal chamber,” says José Veiga 12 October 2015
“All one has to do is spend a normal day in the Santa Catarina de Santiago municipal chamber to find much more than just mismanagement, but also possibly corruption, the embezzlement of funds, falsification and lack of transparency in public management,” according to PAICV vice-chairman José Veiga, reacting to what he called the municipal administration’s “backfiring” in the case of the Environment Fund.
José Veiga today accused the MpD of engaging in “media theatrics,” manipulating the press with regards to the ongoing “Environment Fund” case. Veiga refuted opposition party MpD’s accusations to show that the party is far from innocent. “All one has to do is spend a normal day in the Santa Catarina de Santiago municipal chamber to find much more than just mismanagement, but also possibly corruption, the embezzlement of funds, falsification and lack of transparency in public management,” he said.
Asked if he had proof of his affirmations and questioned as to whether his statements did not reflect the same attitude he had just criticized in the opposition party, Veiga said that he is not making any accusations. “There are concrete denunciations and cases in the courts,” he stressed. When challenged to provide an example, he pointed to the manner in which construction projects are conceived at the Santa Catarina de Santiago municipal chamber. “There’s no public bidding process. The projects are given directly either to relatives of the mayor or to municipal chamber employees.”
“If the MpD wants to know what mismanagement, lack of transparency and everything that should not be done with taxpayers’ money are, all it has to do is follow the trail of the 400 million escudos Ulisses Correia e Silva went to the Stock Exchange to get to finance the Várzea market. All it has to do is look at the way the Praia municipal chamber is hiding the profits made by the company running the parking meters, EMEP, and managing the sale of lands in Praia.”
